Is anyone fishing on board the Jewel? Have any fish been caught, and what types?
As at 4 March 2010 we have not yet caught any fish - but it is not for lack of trying.
We have trolled with lures specifically selected by expert fishermen just for this voyage. We thought by now we would have been able to catch fish such as the dorado (an'faloos in Arabic) so we are puzzled by our lack of success. On the other hand, we are sailing in very deep water in the middle of the ocean and most fish live closer to the coast where there is a greater abundance of food.
Interestingly, when the Sohar (of the famous Sinbad Voyage) sailed across the Indian Ocean in 1980, they too had difficulty catching fish. But we shall keep trying.
